Installations

It’s one thing to toil away in a studio and be satisfied with one’s work, it’s another to bring that work out in public and expose yourself to strangers. Fortunately what I always see are people intrigued and delighted. I’m up for any opportunity to publicly display my work.

Octavia Gallery Show

January 7th to 29th, 2023

My second show in the best gallery space in New Orleans. The folks at Octavia have been my biggest boosters - I wouldn’t have much of a career without them.

This show combined my work along with that of Kurt Hermann from Pennsylvania. Once again, the gallery made a great choice with the combination.

Many things have changed since the last Octavia show. Now powder coating is bring color to pieces - last time everything was polished aluminum and stainless. This time the fan powered bases are gone and replaced with new, completely silent bases that are programmed for extensive random movement.

White Linen Night

Saturday August 6th, 2022

Many thanks to #artsdistrictneworleans for the invitation to participate in White Linen Night 2022, the largest one night arts event in the Southern U.S. From 5pm to 10pm on Saturday, August 6th, 25,000-30,000 people strolled down Julia Street for the first time in several years due to Covid cancellations. But no one had a better time than me - few things in life are more fun that seeing the wonder on people's faces when they first encounter my sculptures moving naturally and effortlessly in a light breeze.

When it comes to White Linen, the third time appears to be the charm. Two years ago an opening at #octavia_art_gallery was to coincide with White Linen, but the cancellation meant that instead of 10,000 people coming through the door there were 60, and 50 of them were friends of mine. Last year the invitation came for the on-street display of sculpture but the event was once again a Covid casualty, cancelled with just two days in advance.

But this past Saturday the weather was perfect, the crowds were a delight and a good time was had by all.

Jammin’ on Julia Street

Saturday May 7th, 2022

How great to see two big sculptures in a downtown setting at this years Jammin' on Julia Street. And it was a great night, not too hot yet, and the street was full of both locals and out of town Jazz Fest visitors.

Jammin' coincides with the First Saturday gallery openings art walk and two of my sculptures were on Julia Street. The district welcomes patrons to an evening block party featuring world class art exhibitions along Julia Street and the surrounding area, with musical performances in select galleries on Julia, Camp, and Magazine Streets, and food trucks & bars on the closed 400-600 blocks of Julia. The event was free and open to the public - a perfect evening to stroll through the historic Arts District and discover New Orleans’ contemporary art, music, and cuisine.

Many thanks to @octavia_art_gallery and @artsdistrictneworleans for helping me participate.

Octavia Gallery Show

August 1 - September 12 2020

Back in January when Octavia made the offer of a 2020 show we had no idea how the world would change in the mean time. It was especially flattering that the opening was scheduled to coincide with the city’s White Linen Night, probably the single largest one night art event in the south. I couldn’t be more pleased with how the show looks and the quality of the work presented. The show is shared with the Light Painting series by San Antonio artist Jerry Cabrera.

LUNA Fête

Lafayette Square December 12th-16th 2019

LUNA Fête is a free multi-block party that also happens to be a walkable art and technology experience. LUNA Fête started as just one installation in 2014 on Lafayette Square in downtown New Orleans - a light and video projection illuminating Gallier Hall. Since then, the celebration has spread up Lafayette Street and four blocks down to Fulton Street. Four pieces of Kinetic Sculpture illuminated by colored LED spotlights and framed by lasers and fog machines were centrally located on Lafayette Square for four nights and seen by over 100,000 people.

Sculpture Garden

September 2019 to present

It was all building management needed to hear: I will take over the side yard, prune the trees, pull the weeds and cut the grass, and I can use it for unlimited sculpture display. For me it’s the perfect combination of display space, testing grounds and zen relaxation garden. all less than 100 steps from my studio door. Anywhere from eight to a dozen pieces are on display at any one time. This is where we’ve perfected our ground installation methods and helped us understand the degree to which different pieces require being secured.

Guichard Gallery Chicago

June 30 - September 30, 2018

Guichard provided an excellent outdoor space for 9 different pieces. It was a great experience to display work this far from home and receive the warm reception that I did. Guichard has great respect in their community and our day time opening pulled over 150 people, on one of the hottest days of decade.

Art for Art’s Sake

2017-2018

Created by the Contemporary Arts Center in 1980, this annual rite of fall has become one of the hottest events of the year for art lovers in and around New Orleans. In 2017 and 2018 I was invited to display work on Magazine Street in the garden in front of Scairono Martinez Architects at 3642 Magazine St, New Orleans.
