Additive Manufacturing

That’s a fancy name for 3D printing. That’s something that’s been a part of my art practice from the very beginning but for strictly internal support reasons. Much of the metal I cut and drill has to be supported at odd angles and 3d printed fixtures and supports have allowed me to do things that would be otherwise extremely difficult.

Then it struck me, why not use 3D Printing to construct the rotating elements for a piece of sculpture?

After a few years now, the results are mixed. And you can see from the picture above, with maybe a quarter of what I’ve attempted, that it’s not for a lack of trying. While I love the colors and organic shapes I can create, I don’t yet have a level of quality execution with the admittedly hobbyist level of machines available.
